Job Overview
The Senior/Lead Automation Engineer will be responsible for the configuration, commissioning, and optimization of automation systems within high-voltage (HV) substations and process control environments. This role requires expertise in substation automation, including hands-on work with gateways, RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, and network equipment from leading vendors such as Eaton, SEL, Foxboro, Schneider, Siemens, and ABB. Proficiency with substation communication protocols (e.g., DNP3, Modbus, IEC60870-5-104, IEC61850) is essential. The engineer will lead automation projects, ensuring robust and compliant system configurations that meet both technical and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities

Substation Automation Systems Design and Configuration: Design and configure HV substation automation systems, including RTUs, gateways, and PLCs. Tailor solutions to meet operational requirements and ensure reliability and safety in control and communication networks.

Configuration and Commissioning: Lead the configuration and commissioning of HV substation equipment, including gateways, RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, and network components. Collaborate with field teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues during deployment.

Vendor Equipment Management: Work with automation equipment from industry-leading brands (Cooper Eaton, SEL, CGI Logica, Foxboro GE Grid, Schneider, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, ABB, Cisco) for optimal integration and performance within substation environments.

Protocol Integration and Testing: Ensure proper integration and functionality of standard substation protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, IEC60870-5-104, and IEC61850. Conduct rigorous testing to validate compatibility and performance across systems.

Automation System Optimization: Continuously analyze and optimize the performance of automation systems to ensure operational efficiency, reliability, and adherence to regulatory standards. Implement upgrades and refinements as needed.

Technical Documentation and Reporting: Prepare detailed technical documentation, including configuration records, test plans, and compliance reports, to ensure transparency and accuracy in all automation engineering deliverables.

Training and Mentorship: Provide training and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians on automation practices, protocols, and software configurations. Support skill development within the automation team.

Compliance and Quality Control: Ensure that all configurations and commissioning activities comply with relevant industry standards and regulations. Perform quality control checks to maintain the integrity and reliability of automation systems.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field.

Experience:
- 10+ years of experience in automation engineering, with specific experience in HV substation automation or process control systems.
- Proven experience in configuration and commissioning of automation equipment at HV substations.

Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in configuring and commissioning substation equipment, including RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, and network devices.
- Strong knowledge of substation communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC60870-5-104, IEC61850).
- Hands-on experience with equipment from Cooper Eaton, SEL, Foxboro, Schneider, Siemens, ABB, Cisco, and related vendors.
