Job Overview
The Senior Telecommunications Engineer is responsible for designing, configuring, and maintaining advanced telecommunications systems within high-voltage substations. This role will focus on substation communication systems, SCADA systems, fiber optic networks, IP networking, and telecommunications protocols, as well as the implementation of microwave and radio systems. The engineer will play a pivotal role in ensuring reliable, efficient, and secure communication networks that support substation operations and remote monitoring systems.
Key Responsibilities

Substation Communication System Design: Develop and implement communication systems for high-voltage substations, ensuring robust data transfer and system reliability. Integrate SCADA systems to enable real-time monitoring and control of substation equipment.

Fiber Optic Network Management: Design, install, and maintain fiber optic networks for substation and control center communications. Conduct regular testing and optimization of fiber networks to ensure high-performance connectivity.

IP Networking and Telecommunications Protocols: Establish and manage IP-based networks, ensuring compliance with telecommunications protocols and standards to support secure and stable network infrastructure.

SCADA Systems Configuration: Configure and maintain SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems within substations, enabling efficient data acquisition and remote control functionalities.

Network Design and Implementation: Lead the planning and deployment of communication networks, with emphasis on design reliability, security, and scalability. Perform site assessments, and create network layouts that meet operational and regulatory requirements.

Microwave and Radio Systems: Design and implement microwave and radio communication systems to provide reliable, long-distance communication links. Optimize these systems for performance in substation environments.

Protocol Integration and Compliance: Ensure that telecommunication systems conform to industry protocols, enabling interoperability and reliability across devices and systems.

Documentation and Reporting: Develop detailed technical documentation, including design blueprints, network configurations, testing protocols, and maintenance records, ensuring accuracy and accessibility for project stakeholders.

Troubleshooting and Support: Provide technical support for telecommunications issues, working closely with operations and maintenance teams to diagnose and resolve network problems swiftly.

Mentorship and Training: Mentor junior engineers and technicians in telecommunications best practices, protocols, and troubleshooting techniques, fostering a skilled and knowledgeable team.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Experience:
- 10+ years of experience in telecommunications engineering, specifically within the utilities or energy sectors.
- Proven track record with substation communication systems, SCADA, fiber optic networks, IP networking, and telecommunications protocols.

Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in designing and maintaining fiber optic networks, SCADA systems, and IP-based networks.
- Hands-on experience with microwave and radio systems in substation environments.
- Strong understanding of telecommunications protocols and standards relevant to substations.
