Location: Refining and Petrochemical Industry

Role Overview

The Mass Balance Engineer is responsible for controlling refinery operations through operational and economic analysis. This includes utilizing mass balance equations to evaluate monitoring data, ensuring accuracy in refinery reporting, and aligning inputs with outputs to enhance operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Daily Validation: Review and validate daily mass balance data, making corrections or amendments when discrepancies arise.
  • Error-Free Reporting: Use mass balance software tools to publish accurate daily mass balances.
  • Monthly Reporting: Perform monthly checks on mass balance data and route reports for management approval.
  • Refinery Link Management: Monitor changes in refinery links (e.g., tank-to-tank, tank-to-unit connections) and update the mass balance tool with permanent adjustments.
  • Graph Maintenance: Maintain up-to-date mass balance graphs reflecting refinery logistics (e.g., piping, tank farms, imports, and exports).
  • Fuel Balance & Loss Analysis: Review weekly fuel balance sheets, generate refinery-wide loss reports, and develop flare, flare liquids, and slops reports.
  • Energy Intensity Index (EII): Assist in establishing monthly balances for fuel gas and liquid fuels using data from process engineering, including steam and fuel balances.
  • Forecast Assessments: Analyze forecast accuracy by comparing projected prices with actual prices monthly and reporting insights in meetings.

  • Improved operational efficiency and seamless communication between internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent.

Certifications

  • Preferred but not mandatory.

Experience

  • A minimum of six (6) years of experience in refining operations, including at least two (2) years in a similar position.
  • Previous experience in operations such as offsite scheduling, performance control, or oil accounting is preferred.

Skills & Competencies

Technical Knowledge:

  • Expertise in refinery internal reporting, mass balance control, and production optimization.
  • Strong understanding of performance control, oil accounting, and statistical modeling.
  • Solid grasp of refining process engineering principles.

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in dynamic environments.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical abilities.

Other Skills:

  • Proficient in contract management.
  • Strong command of oral and written English.
